The Big One. Mark's B-Day present for last year was a day of guided climbing in the high peaks with CMS. We did the Better than Love to the Love Route (Grade III, 5.9) and had the most amazing day.
Watching the first colors of dawn after an hour of hiking in the dark
Early sunlight through clouds and mist
Mist hangs around the high peaks of Rocky Mountain in the early morning
Mark and Eric on the final bit of dark approach
Sunrise above Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park
Sunrise in the clouds above Rocky Mountain NP
Sunrise through the mists and clouds
Watching the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen
Mountains, clouds, mist, and new sun
The fog lifts like a blanket off the peaks
The swirling cloud of mist above Dream Lake
Sunrise in the mountains
Rocky Mountain sunrise
The mist catches the early morning light
Alpinglow on the fog above the high lakes
At the base of the Culp-Bossier route, 5:30a, 3rd in line
Alpin glow lighting up the spires and peaks around us
The warm sun breaks the sky
Morning mist
In the high country of Colorado
Kate and Mark wait at the base of Culp-Bossier
The sun just starting to illuminate the peaks
Sunrise over the Rockies in Colorado
Looking up at the 4th pitch and the distant headwall
Mark climbing in the shadow-filled dihedral below me
Lightened up the shot so you can see Mark now
Eric at the sunny, but windy and still cold belay
Looking up at the steep, blank face of Hallets above us
The last four pitches up the headwall of Hallets Peak - Love Route (III, 5.9R)
The views just get better and better as we get higher and higher
Looking down on Dream Lake and the glacial valley
Looking out over the peaks surrounding us
Eric leading the 6th pitch, the best single pitch of climbing I've ever done
The view down 1000ft of wall below our belay stance
Looking out over mountains and valleys
The lakes look beautiful in the summer sun
We're actually looking down on Lumpy Ridge from up here
Watching the wind blast over dream lake from our tiny belay perch
Kate and Mark having a blast on the big alpine climb
Mark pulling over the final 5.9 roof, hanging over 1500ft of empty air
Estes Park and Lumpy Ridge from the top of Hallet's Peak
Mark gets to take his rock shoes off after 8 pitches of steep climbing
Mark and Eric clean up on top of Hallets
Looking out over the lakes, mountains and valleys of Rocky Mountain NP
Eric walks along the ridge of Hallets towards the rap station
Eric walking along the top of Hallet's Peak
Kate hiking along the ridge
Kate in the big mountains
Mark and Kate, totally jazzed about their awesome climb
Mark and Kate lining up for another summit shot :)
Mark and Kate on top of Hallets Peak - what an awesome climb
Looking up at Hallets and the climb we just did
Our route for the day - Better than Love to Love Route (III, 5.9)
We're low enough that we can start to see hikers on the rocks around Dream Lake
Still a nice view, on a sunny afternoon in the park
