Mark's parents found a unit in Bend, Oregon, and we drove out to spend a week in the beautiful deserts, volcanoes, forests and mountains of this amazing state.

We did the trip from Fort Collins, CO to Bend, OR (about 1000 miles) in our Prius, in about 18 hours, on only 25 gallons of gas ($75). Not bad!

On our first day in Bend, we scooted up to Smith rock for a few quick routes in the afternoon. What a lovely place.

The weather closed in on the mountains around us, but Mark and I got out for a few hours on Monday. We headed a few miles south, to check out the lakes, waterfalls, and huge obsidian flows in Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

After the storms blew through, we spent a day driving around, ooo-ing and ah-ing, and taking a bajillion pictures in Crater Lake National Park.

On our last day in Bend, we headed north early to spend the whole day pinching pebbles and pulling pockets at Smith Rock State Park.

We spent the day, Thursday, taking our time and driving slowly north and west to Portland. We got to see big mountains, the Columbia river gorge, kite surfers, and lots of waterfalls.

We had one morning to spend in Portland before heading home. So we took a few hours to explore the beautiful Japanese gardens that sit on a hill above the city.

We drove from Portland to Fort Collins in a little more than two days. On the way, we camped along the Columbia river, and visited the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
